A 40-year-old man has been arrested in Mombasa after authorities discovered heroin worth an estimated Ksh1.8 million concealed in his residence.

According to a statement released by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Saturday, May 17, 2025, anti-narcotics officers conducted a raid at the suspect’s home in Kikambala following a tip-off. The man was taken by surprise during the operation.

While searching the premises, officers uncovered a blue carrier bag hidden beneath a mattress. Inside, they found six securely wrapped packets of heroin, with a total weight of approximately 600 grams.

Detectives acting on credible intelligence conducted a surprise raid at the suspect’s residence in Kikambala, catching him completely off guard.

During a swift search of the house, officers discovered a blue carrier bag hidden beneath a mattress. Inside were six tightly sealed packets of heroin, weighing a total of 600 grams.

The suspect was immediately taken into custody and escorted to the Port Police Station along with the recovered narcotics. He is currently being processed as investigations continue, and is expected to be arraigned in court in the coming days.

According to the police, this arrest represents a major breakthrough in ongoing operations aimed at dismantling drug networks in the coastal region. Authorities have called on the public to remain vigilant and continue sharing information that could assist in curbing the illegal drug trade.

The heroin haul has been secured as crucial evidence and will be presented in court to support the case.

This development comes just days after a sweeping anti-narcotics operation led to the arrest of 286 foreign nationals suspected to be part of a transnational drug trafficking network.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen revealed the arrests during the Jukwaa La Usalama forum in Marsabit on Wednesday, May 14, 2025.

He was receiving a detailed update on Operation Ondoa Jangili—a multi-agency crackdown targeting organized criminal groups operating in Marsabit and Isiolo counties.

"Operation Ondoa Jangili, which focuses on flushing out criminal elements from Isiolo and Marsabit, has greatly contributed to restoring calm in areas that have for years been plagued by insecurity," Murkomen stated in a post shared on X.

The Cabinet Secretary highlighted the mission's contribution in addressing key security challenges such as the proliferation of illicit firearms, unlawful mining, human and drug trafficking, as well as cross-border crime.

Murkomen reported that the ongoing security operation has resulted in the recovery of over 200 illegal weapons and the arrest of more than 300 individuals, many of whom are already facing prosecution.
