Nairobi water employee to defend self in academic forgery case

Brenda Nelly Sulungai was today placed on her defense by the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court after the prosecution, led by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), presented sufficient evidence supporting all three charges she faces.
A Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) employee has been ordered to defend herself in a case involving alleged academic certificate forgery, after a court found she has a case to answer.
Brenda Nelly Sulungai was today placed on her defense by the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court after the prosecution, led by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), presented sufficient evidence supporting all three charges she faces.
Sulungai was charged on October 31, 2024, with Forgery, uttering a False Document, and Deceiving a Principal, contrary to Section 48 of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act, 2003 (ACECA).
According to court documents, Sulungai is accused of forging a Diploma in Community Development and Social Work, purporting it to be a genuine certificate issued by Zetech University on November 6, 2015.
The prosecution further alleges that on July 4, 2019, she presented the forged diploma to the Managing Director of NCWSC as an authentic academic credential.
On November 22, 2021, while serving as a Community Development Assistant, Sulungai allegedly submitted the forged document again, this time to update her personnel file, intentionally deceiving her employer with information she is said to have known was false.
The prosecution called four witnesses and submitted 25 documentary exhibits to support its case.
Key evidence included expert analysis showing that the signatures on the contested certificate did not match those of the authorized Zetech University signatories, including the Vice Chancellor and Deputy Vice Chancellor.
The court has scheduled the defense hearing for August 22, 2025.
