IEBC chairperson candidate Justice Charles Nyachae believes he is the right person to lead the electoral commission, citing his extensive experience in law, governance, and institutional leadership.

Facing the selection panel at the College of Insurance in Nairobi’s South C estate on Monday, March 24, Nyachae expressed confidence in his ability to unite and strengthen the commission ahead of future elections.

Nyachae, a renowned legal expert, argued that his background uniquely positions him to restore public trust in the IEBC.

He pointed to his tenure as chair of the defunct Constitutional Implementation Committee, where he oversaw critical legal and governance reforms, as proof of his ability to navigate complex institutional challenges.

He also defended his decision to resign from the East African Court of Justice (EACJ) in January 2024, two years before his term ended, citing the court's dysfunctionality, further adding he was earning $2,000 per month “for doing nothing,” a situation he found untenable.

Nyachae, who was appointed to the EACJ by former President Uhuru Kenyatta after an unsuccessful bid for the East Africa Legislative Assembly, has also played a role in politics, campaigning for Jubilee in Kisii County and vying for the Senate seat, though unsuccessfully.

Currently chairing the Kenya School of Government Council, Nyachae assured the panel that he would step down from the role if selected to lead the IEBC.

He emphasized that strong leadership is key to uniting the commission, harnessing its diverse expertise, and ensuring credible, efficient, and transparent elections.
