Slain Kasipul MP Were's body arrives in Homa Bay

The legislator’s body was airlifted from Wilson Airport to Homa Bay in preparation for his burial, set to take place on Friday.
A cloud of grief hung over Homa Bay County as the remains of the late Kasipul MP, Ong’ondo Were, arrived from Kapunde Airstrip on May 8, 2025.
The legislator’s body was airlifted from Wilson Airport to Homa Bay in preparation for his burial, set to take place on Friday, May 9, 2025, at his ancestral home.
A long motorcade was seen escorting the body from Kapunde Airstrip, led by Governor Gladys Wanga and several politicians, including Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma.
Wanga and Kaluma stood through the sunroofs of their vehicles, leading the somber procession with visible emotion as they made their way toward the late MP’s home.
At Kabunde Airstrip, mourners broke into wails as the coffin was transferred into the hearse, overwhelmed by grief at the sight.
Emotional cries and sobs echoed from those who had gathered near the airstrip, mourning the tragic loss of the MP.
Ong’ondo was gunned down last Wednesday along Ngong Road by an unidentified assailant, believed to have escaped on a motorcycle moments after the attack.
Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor confirmed that the MP sustained five gunshot wounds to the chest at close range, a clear indication of a targeted and deliberate attack, according to police.
As outlined in the funeral programme, a public viewing of the body will take place before his burial at his rural home in Kachien Village, Kasipul Constituency.
This comes as a firearm used in the fatal shooting of the late Were was recovered by detectives.
Police have now confirmed that the weapon was also involved in several armed robberies in Nairobi and Kiambu counties.
The discovery was made during a Tuesday night operation in Chokaa, Kayole, where police found two guns, a bag, and a pair of shoes.
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja said the breakthrough marked a major step forward in the investigation.
