Nyeri Archbishop Anthony Muheria has urged young people to embrace empathy and listen to their leaders, warning against the rising culture of insults and political hostility.

Speaking during a Sunday service, Archbishop Muheria expressed concern over what he termed a toxic political environment where leaders often focus on personal attacks instead of dialogue.

“To our youth, I appeal for unity and openness. Walk with us. In politics today, we rarely tolerate one another we compete in trading insults and publicly tearing each other down,” he said.

He said his message was rooted in love, which he believes is essential for national unity and meaningful development.

“We’ve been blessed with an incredible country. Regardless of your political views or ambitions, the most important goal is the dignity of human life. We must protect the vulnerable, uplift the poor, and foster a culture of listening and mutual respect, even when we disagree,” he said.

The archbishop also urged Kenyans to pray for the departed and to draw strength from unity as the country grapples with political and social challenges. He called on both citizens and leaders to show patriotism and responsibility in their words and actions.

“Can we shift from competing in hate to competing in love? In embracing acts of goodwill instead of disgraceful behavior? I believe there is hope because it is hope rooted in God,” he added.

Frustrated by this political climate, many young people have called for accountability and urged leaders to focus on service delivery rather than divisive politics.

The youth have also been outspoken in their opposition to police brutality. On June 17, protesters in Nairobi took to the streets to demand justice for Albert Ojwang’, a social media influencer who died under unclear circumstances while in police custody.

The peaceful protest later turned violent after organized groups reportedly infiltrated the march, attacking and robbing demonstrators.

Among those injured was Boniface Kariuki, a protester who suffered serious head injuries after being shot at.
