Police warn: Don’t hire youth for ‘protection’ during June 25 protests

Muchiri confirmed that police are reviewing CCTV footage to identify those involved and assured that arrests will be made.
Police spokesperson Michael Muchiri has warned Kenyans against hiring young people as informal security during planned protests, saying the move is illegal and could lead to violence.
Speaking during a radio interview on Monday , Muchiri said only law enforcement officers have the mandate to protect businesses and maintain order, adding that recruiting private groups under the guise of business protection poses serious risks.
"Anyone claiming to be protecting their business by hiring youth is in clear violation of the law. That responsibility solely lies with security agencies," said Muchiri.
His comments come after reports that politically connected individuals allegedly hired goons during recent protests in Nairobi, claiming to shield businesses from vandalism. However, video footage has shown some of these individuals engaging in criminal acts, including mugging peaceful demonstrators and looting shops.
Muchiri confirmed that police are reviewing CCTV footage to identify those involved and assured that arrests will be made.
"The footage we’ve seen tells a different story. We’re now in the process of identifying culprits, and arrests will follow. No act of lawlessness will be tolerated," he asserted.
He urged citizens to remain peaceful during the upcoming June 25 nationwide protests, which are being organized to honour victims of the 2024 anti-Finance Bill demonstrations and demand justice for lives lost.
"Let’s maintain peace and dignity during this period. We must learn from past mistakes and ensure the rule of law prevails. As police officers, we also deserve respect while doing our job," Muchiri added.
Separately, Nairobi Central OCPD Stephen Okal has met with protest organisers and assured them that police will be on the ground to protect demonstrators and maintain calm during the event.
