Kenya Railways halts four Nairobi routes amid protest tensions
In Summary

The corporation said the Nairobi–Ruiru, Nairobi–Embakasi Village, Nairobi–Lukenya, and Nairobi–Syokimau routes would be suspended until further notice.

Kenya Railways has suspended four commuter train services within Nairobi in response to ongoing nationwide protests, citing the need to protect passengers from potential harm during the unrest.

In a public notice issued Wednesday, the corporation said the Nairobi–Ruiru, Nairobi–Embakasi Village, Nairobi–Lukenya, and Nairobi–Syokimau routes would be suspended until further notice.

“We wish to notify members of the public that commuter train services for Nairobi–Ruiru, Nairobi–Embakasi Village, Nairobi–Lukenya, and Nairobi–Syokimau have been temporarily suspended,” the statement read.
“We are compelled to take these precautionary measures because the safety of our customers is of paramount importance to us.”

The agency did not provide a timeline for when normal services would resume but assured commuters of timely updates.
“We will advise you once normal services resume. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused,” the corporation added.

Kenya Railways becomes the latest service provider to pull back operations as protest-related disruptions intensify across Nairobi and other towns. The protests—led largely by Gen Z—have caused traffic standstills, business closures, and heavy police deployments in major city centres.

Metro Trans Sacco, a key matatu operator in the city, also announced the suspension of all its Nairobi and nearby routes, citing safety concerns and restricted access to the CBD.
“We wish to inform you that our operations will be temporarily suspended on Wednesday due to the planned demonstrations. Normal services will resume on Thursday, 26th June 2025,” the company said.
“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.”

The transport shutdowns come amid widespread tension, as businesses and service providers take precautionary measures to protect workers, passengers, and infrastructure. With movement restricted and roads sealed off in parts of the capital, commuters were left stranded or forced to seek alternative means of transport.
