President William Ruto has reiterated that he will not apologize for building a church at State House, saying the project is a personal commitment rooted in faith and not funded by government resources.

Speaking during an address at State House on Friday, Ruto pushed back against growing criticism over the Sh1.2 billion construction, insisting that the funds are coming directly from his own pocket.

“I am not building it with government money—I’m using my own money. The construction of the Church is not costing the government a single cent,” he stated.

The President said his decision was driven by respect for God and described the backlash as an attack on faith. “I am someone who believes in God. I will not apologize to anyone for building a church. We will build the house of God, and if the devil gets angry, let him do whatever he wants,” he said.

Ruto confirmed that the new structure will replace a small iron-sheet church that he found in place when he took office. “Yes, it’s true—I am building a church here at State House. When I came to State House, I found a tin-roofed church. Does a tin-roofed church befit State House?” he asked.

He emphasized that the church was not his idea, but a place of worship he inherited and chose to upgrade. “I did not start a church at State House; I found a tin-roofed church already here,” Ruto added.

The Head of State also revealed his intention to lead worship in the new facility once it is ready. “One day I’ll take you there so we can go and pray… I’ve made the decision, we will build a proper church,” he said.

The comments come after a Daily Nation report revealed that the church would have a seating capacity of up to 8,000 people and include stained-glass windows and large crosses, prompting outrage from Kenyans concerned about government spending and national priorities.

The project has ignited widespread debate, with many questioning the timing and scale of such a development in the middle of a harsh economic climate.

Critics argue the resources could be better directed toward addressing pressing challenges like unemployment, the high cost of living, and underfunded public services.

Still, Ruto held firm, saying he will not be swayed by criticism and will continue to honour his faith without apology.
