National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has dismissed what he described as a 'desperate opposition campaign' seeking to discredit President William Ruto’s administration and derail its development agenda.
Speaking at Mukothima Primary School in Tharaka Constituency during a women’s empowerment drive hosted by MP George Murugara, Wetang’ula said the opposition was frustrated by the government’s visible progress in transforming the country.
“This government has rolled out projects in every corner of the republic — from affordable housing and road construction to health reforms under the Social Health Authority (SHA),” the Speaker said.
Citing economic gains, Wetang’ula noted that the Kenyan shilling had strengthened from Sh160 to Sh128 against the US dollar, attributing the improvement to effective leadership.
“The economy is recovering, and that is not by accident. That is leadership,” he added.
He accused the opposition of lacking a clear policy direction, claiming it was instead relying on outdated politics of insults, tribalism, and anger.
“You ask them for their plan, and all they say is ‘Ruto must go.’ That is not policy but noise. Kenya cannot be governed by anger and bitterness,” Wetang’ula stated.
The Speaker urged Tharaka residents to support President Ruto’s bid for a second term in 2027, saying continued stability was essential to consolidate the gains achieved so far.
He also praised Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, describing him as a disciplined and dignified leader who embodies the true spirit of a principal assistant to the President.
“Prof. Kindiki does not gossip or insult others. He leads with humility and respect. We are proud of him,” Wetang’ula said.
Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, who accompanied the Speaker, called on young Kenyans to register as voters ahead of the 2027 polls, saying, “If you are 18 and not registered, you have surrendered your voice. Your vote is your weapon.”
Other leaders, including Kitutu Chache North MP Japheth Nyakundi and Taita Taveta MP Victor Bwire, echoed calls to back President Ruto’s re-election, with Bwire declaring support for the Deputy President after Ruto's second term.
"We will re-elect Ruto in 2027, and in 2032, we shall return the favour by electing Kindiki.”
