In Summary

According to the lawyers, DCI officers had earlier stated that Maiyo would be arraigned at the Kahawa Law Courts. However, that did not happen.

Nairobi businessman and popular TikTok personality Kakan Maiyo was released on a Sh10,000 police bond on Friday, days after plain-clothed detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations forcibly arrested him at his office.

Following the arrest, Maiyo’s legal team, led by the Law Society of Kenya’s Vice President Mwaura Kabata, demanded the charges against him be dropped, citing a complete lack of formal accusations.

Despite earlier claims from the DCI that he would be arraigned at Kahawa Law Courts, he was never formally presented in court.

“The DCI failed to arraign him in court despite claiming that he would be presented at Kahawa Law Courts. This is a total infringement on his rights,” his lawyers said in a statement.

Reports further reveal that hours before his release, Maiyo was taken to Milimani Law Courts but was not brought before a judge.

Instead, he was returned to Muthaiga Police Station where he was later released on the police bond, which permits an arrested individual to remain free while awaiting a court appearance.

Maiyo, widely known on social media as Kan, was detained following a viral video in which he allegedly encouraged violence against police officers and their families. He is known for his outspoken criticism of government failures and police misconduct on TikTok.

Although the Directorate of Criminal Investigations has not specified which video prompted his arrest, one clip shows Maiyo urging police officers to stop abducting unarmed citizens and refusing to be used as instruments by powerful figures.

He appeals to the officers to think about their own families, children, and loved ones before following such orders.

Maiyo has also shared content responding to recent events such as the death of blogger Albert Ojwang, who died in police custody.

Kakan Maiyo is scheduled to appear before Milimani Court on July 14, 2025, at 8 am. Meanwhile, his legal team continues to push for the charges to be dropped due to lack of evidence and ongoing violations of his rights.
