Lari Boys High School has been closed indefinitely following a massive fire on the night of Saturday, July 14, which razed several critical sections of the institution, including the administration block, classrooms, and the library.

The blaze, which erupted around 9 pm, is suspected to have been ignited by students allegedly protesting a ban on the use of musical instruments.

According to school officials, tensions had been brewing among the students after they were reportedly barred from accessing musical equipment. The fire broke out shortly after lights-out, plunging the school into chaos.

As a result, all students were sent home on Sunday as investigations into the incident commenced. Only the dormitories were left untouched by the flames.

Parents and residents took to social media to express their alarm. One concerned parent, Grace Shiru, posted, “Lari Boys is on fire. Please, God, protect my son and the others.” Another user, Wilson Njogu, wrote, “Lari Boys on fire. Should we rush there and help? MCA Nyutu has dispatched five fire trucks. Some students have escaped into the forest singing WANTAM.”

Eyewitnesses reported commotion erupting shortly after bedtime, with some students fleeing into nearby thickets. Videos circulating online captured thick smoke and towering flames engulfing the compound, while shouts and chants could be heard in the background.

Firefighters from Kiambu County, under the directive of local MCA Nyutu Wamwere, responded swiftly with five fire engines. Despite their efforts, significant destruction had already occurred by the time the fire was contained.

No injuries were reported, but the damage is extensive. The administration block and laboratory where key documents, funds, and student records were kept were completely destroyed.

Education officials and school management were at the scene on Sunday to assess the damage. Authorities confirmed that investigations were underway to establish whether the fire was premeditated or spontaneous.

Security officers have joined the probe as officials work to piece together what triggered the unrest.

Parents have been urged to stay alert as consultations between the Ministry of Education and local leaders continue regarding the way forward.
