KMPDU defends Kiambu doctors’ strike, accuses county of neglect

The union accused the county administration of subjecting healthcare workers to continued neglect and mistreatment.
The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has firmly defended the ongoing doctors' strike in Kiambu County, insisting it is both lawful and morally warranted.
The union accused the county administration of subjecting healthcare workers to continued neglect and mistreatment, warning that the industrial action will not be called off until meaningful reforms are undertaken.
In a strongly worded statement posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Friday, July 25, 2025, KMPDU condemned the county government’s failure to address long-standing issues affecting medical staff.
Among the grievances cited are delayed promotions, poor medical insurance coverage, and threats of dismissal and harassment all of which the union says point to systemic failures and deliberate disregard for health workers' rights.
“The Kiambu doctors’ strike is not only legal but also necessary," read the statement. "The county has ignored court rulings affirming the right to strike and continues to frustrate healthcare professionals through intimidation and neglect.”
The union maintained that these problems are not isolated but rather part of a larger culture of poor leadership and institutional disrespect.
KMPDU also voiced concern over the deteriorating relationship between the county’s leadership and health personnel, warning that trust has eroded to dangerous levels.
"What we are witnessing is not mere administrative failure; it's a deep-rooted contempt for health workers and a collapse in leadership,” the union said.
Declaring that the era of silence is over, KMPDU vowed to continue standing up for the rights of its members. “There are no kings in Kiambu, and we shall not bow to any form of tyranny,” the statement read.
The union revealed it has already submitted formal petitions to both the County Assembly and the Governor’s office, calling for urgent accountability and intervention.
In closing, KMPDU reaffirmed its national mandate to protect healthcare workers across all counties and to challenge any form of injustice.
“Tyranny feeds on silence. We refuse to be silent,” the union declared, signaling its continued resolve to fight for fair treatment within the public health sector.
