Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has been officially installed as a Luo elder and given the traditional name Odhiambo, in a colorful cultural ceremony held at Ong’er grounds in Nyatike Constituency, Migori County.
The Deputy President was in Migori to preside over an economic empowerment forum when he was honored by community elders in a symbolic gesture meant to recognize his calm leadership style, peaceful demeanor, and growing connection with the region.
Kindiki was robed in traditional Luo leadership regalia, presented with a ceremonial spear and shield, and invited to sit on the symbolic “seat of power” a revered cultural act that signifies authority, respect, and responsibility to defend the people.
He was also given the name "Odhiambo", often associated with individuals born in the evening, reflecting the elders’ view of Kindiki as a composed, diplomatic, and thoughtful leader.
In his address, the Deputy President highlighted several projects that the Kenya Kwanza administration is undertaking in Migori and surrounding counties to improve livelihoods.
He noted that the government is committed to equitable development and inclusive governance, ensuring that all regions regardless of political affiliation benefit from national resources.
Kindiki also called on political leaders across the divide to emulate former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, commending him for consistently putting the country's interests ahead of personal or political ambition. He said unity and mutual respect among leaders remain essential for national progress.
The ceremony was attended by high-ranking leaders including National Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi, Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot, Migori Governor Ochillo Ayacko, Woman Representative Fatuma ‘Full Network’ Mohamed, Nyatike MP Tom Odege, Migori Senator Eddie Oketch, and the President’s private aide Farouk Kibet.
Kindiki’s crowning comes just months after President William Ruto and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni were similarly honoured during the Piny Luo cultural festival in Siaya County, an event also attended by Raila Odinga.
The cultural celebration, themed “Luo Unity in Diversity and in Diaspora,” brought together members of the Luo community from across Kenya and beyond.
Kindiki's installation is being seen as both a unifying gesture and a political statement, reflecting Kenya Kwanza’s ongoing efforts to strengthen ties with the Luo community through development, dialogue, and cultural diplomacy.
