Constitutional Lawyer, Professor PLO Lumumba has delivered a sobering assessment of Kenya’s democracy, describing it as limited and flawed.

Speaking on Radio Generation’s People’s Breakfast Show, Lumumba said that on a scale of 1 to 10 measuring fidelity to good governance, Kenya scores just a 3.

Lumumba attributed this low rating to deep-rooted hypocrisy among Kenyan voters and the pervasive influence of ethnic politics.

“The Kenyan problem is tribalism,” he said, explaining that voters’ responses are often shaped by ethnic loyalties rather than issue-based politics.

He sharply criticized politicians who, despite making empty promises of youth empowerment, continue to exploit ethnic divisions and manipulate voters often even at funerals

“Politicians lie at funerals talking about empowerment of the youth until voters take charge,” Lumumba said, urging citizens to reject this cycle and demand accountability.

Lumumba further pointed out that many of Kenya’s current political and governance challenges stem from outdated rules and practices inherited from the Moi administration.

“Our government is progressing, but only because of a lack of fidelity. We are making blunders,” he said, highlighting the urgent need for reform.

He also condemned the deteriorating state of Kenya’s infrastructure, noting that roads across the country remain in sorry states.

On the constitutional front, Lumumba expressed alarm over what he described as extra-constitutional actions by former prime minister Raila Odinga, particularly relating to the NADCO report.

He accused Odinga of moving beyond constitutional boundaries, warning that such moves threaten the democratic spirit of the country. “That spirit must be rekindled,” he urged, emphasizing the importance of upholding the constitution.

Lumumba’s remarks come amid growing calls for stronger governance, voter education, and renewed commitment to constitutionalism in Kenya.

He emphasized that lasting change will only come when voters become more aware and assertive, demanding honesty and performance from their leaders.

As Kenya prepares for future elections and political reforms, Lumumba’s critique serves as a stark reminder of the work needed to build a more accountable and inclusive democracy.
