CS Murkomen confirms probe into alleged Jubaland forces in Mandera

The Cabinet Secretary also cautioned politicians against politicising the issue, emphasizing that security matters are treated with the utmost care to safeguard national interests.
The National Government has responded to concerns over reports that Jubaland forces may have crossed into Mandera.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said on Wednesday in Busia that security agencies are actively investigating the claims.
Murkomen denied that the government had prior knowledge of the alleged presence of the forces, stressing that any individuals entering the country due to conflict in Somalia will be identified and handled in line with international law.
“The government’s priority is to ensure that no criminal elements enter the country. Those seeking refuge will be assisted in collaboration with the Somali government, with whom Kenya enjoys good relations,” he said, responding to journalists’ questions.
The Cabinet Secretary also cautioned politicians against politicising the issue, emphasizing that security matters are treated with the utmost care to safeguard national interests.
He assured Mandera residents that their safety is guaranteed and that security agencies remain on high alert to address potential threats.
Murkomen’s comments followed concerns raised by Mandera Governor Mohamed Khalif over what he described as a spillover of Jubaland forces into Kenyan territory.
The governor said their presence threatens national security and undermines the country’s sovereignty.
“Good health is inseparable from peace and security. Recently, fighting between the Somali National Army and Jubaland forces spilt across our border, disrupting lives and threatening the safety of our people. Disturbingly, some of those forces have been hosted within Kenyan territory, compromising our national sovereignty and endangering our citizens. As Governor of Mandera, I strongly condemn this," Khalif said.
“The safety and security of our people is non-negotiable. We call on all actors, local, regional and international, to respect our borders and support peace and stability in the region,” he added.
