Marsabit County Commissioner James Kamau said a multi-agency security team has been dispatched to track down the suspects, arrest them, and recover the weapons used.

An intense security operation is underway in Kurkum, Loiyangalani sub-county, Marsabit County, following the killing of three people on Saturday.

The incident happened at Gathabi Ergek after two groups of herders clashed over access to water for their livestock.

One other herder sustained gunshot wounds during the confrontation, which police say involved the use of illegal firearms.

Marsabit County Commissioner James Kamau confirmed the incident, warning that the possession of illegal guns is a serious crime. He said a multi-agency security team has been dispatched to track down the suspects, arrest them, and recover the weapons used.

Kamau stressed that only the government has the responsibility of providing security for Kenyans and their property, adding that security personnel have strict instructions to bring the culprits to justice.

He vowed that the operation would continue until the suspects are arrested and the illegal firearms retrieved.

The county commissioner, who also chairs the county security and intelligence committee, appealed to herders to live peacefully and share grazing resources amicably.

He further urged calm among pastoralist communities as investigations continue.

The incident comes just days after the government issued a two-week ultimatum for the surrender of all illegal firearms, warning of a forceful disarmament operation if the directive is ignored.

Kamau said the attack was clear proof that dangerous weapons remain in the wrong hands in the region and warned that a mop-up exercise is imminent unless residents voluntarily comply.
