The unrest broke out late Sunday following reports of an altercation between a teacher and a Form Three student at about 9pm on Sunday.

Nairobi's St. George’s Girls Secondary School has been closed indefinitely after a night of chaos and confrontation between students and teachers.

The unrest broke out late Sunday following reports of an altercation between a teacher and a Form Three student at about 9 pm on Sunday.

The girl is said to have suffered a jaw injury during the incident.

The disturbance reportedly began as students were outside observing the “blood moon” during the solar eclipse.

The alleged assault sparked a riot, with students pulling down the school gate and storming onto Dennis Pritt Road.

The group staged a sit-in before marching to the nearby Royal Media Services offices. Witnesses said efforts to persuade the girls to return were met with resistance as they continued chanting and protesting.

Police intervened around midnight, escorting the students back into the compound, though they refused to enter their dormitories. Officers kept guard at the gate overnight.

By Monday morning, the standoff had drawn senior officials, among them Dagoretti North Subcounty Commissioner and education ministry representatives.

Kilimani OCPD Patricia Yegon also tried to defuse tensions.

The shutdown comes amid growing concerns over student unrest in schools. Education officials are expected to investigate both the alleged assault and the destruction of property that followed.
