A man whom police have been searching for since the body of British national Campbell Scott was discovered in Makongo Forest, Makueni County, has died by suicide, official reports say.
According to the police, the deceased Samuel Musembi succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment at the Kenyatta National Hospital.
Musembi had requested temporary accommodation at a friend's house, saying that he needed a break from his usual residence for unspecified reasons, police explain.
The friend told the family that he had left for work on Tuesday morning, leaving an uneasy Musembi behind to rest. However, when he returned in the evening, he found the door locked from the inside.
After forcing it open, he discovered Musembi lying on the bed with a slashed neck and foaming from his mouth and nose.
Musembi was rushed to Mama Lucy Hospital but then transferred to the Kenyatta National Hospital due to the severity of his injuries where he died in the casualty section.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations stated that preliminary findings suggest Musembi may have died by suicide.
"The exact cause of death will be determined through an autopsy," noted the DCI.
Investigators had linked Musembi to the transportation of 58-year-old Scott’s body inside a sack filled with pineapples. The remains were allegedly moved from Pipeline, Nairobi, to Makongo Forest in Makueni.
Scott, who had traveled to Kenya for business was reportedly lured into a meeting by his attackers before he disappeared on February 17.
Two suspects, Alex Mutua Kithuka and Albunus Mutinda Nzioki, have already been arrested in connection with the murder and are assisting police in the investigations.
Two others Bernard Mbusu and Alphonse Kilewa are still at large and being sought.
