Drama as Sasha Mutai resigns as head of Kenya Rugby Union

Mutai resigned in a huff on Friday at the Rugby Football Union of East Africa RFUEA Grounds, claiming that he had been ambushed by fellow board members over a number of issues regarding integrity.
Sasha Mutai has resigned as the Kenya Rugby Union chairman following an explosive board meeting in Nairobi.
Mutai, who has been at the helm of KRU for two years resigned in a huff on Friday at the Rugby Football Union of East Africa RFUEA Grounds, claiming that he had been ambushed by fellow board members over a number of issues regarding integrity.
The allegations were brought forth during a Special General Meeting convened to discuss and address the challenges facing the union.
"I have resigned as the head of KRU and I leave with my head held high, Mutai told reporters in the aftermath of the AGM. " There was an SGM and some members were looking to eject me as head of the chairman of the union," he said.
"They said that I'm involved in dictatorship and other things. As such, I read the mood in the room and have offered to tender my resignation."
Mutai has been battling wrangles for a while now at the Union, which is not new to infighting.
The chair had been placed on the hot seat on allegations of misappropriation of Sh13.2 million through illegal payments to vendors that did not provide services.
The motion had been introduced by Secretary General Ray Olendo who has been at crosshairs with Mutai ever since they both ascended to the board two years ago.
During the meeting, Mutai denied the allegations and accused Olendo of soiling his name by making false accusations. He promised to take the matter to court now that he has quit the KRU board.
Mutai, whilst accepting defeat, said that he was proud of his tenure and will still play a part in helping out a game that he loves dearly.
"I have been a player, a manager, a board member, a vice chairman and now chairman. I have served rugby in various capacities and leave here a proud man thanks to what I have achieved," he insisted.
"There were no sponsors prior to when I arrived, and player welfare has now been looked at. I leave with my head held high."
It remains to be seen what the next step becomes at KRU, especially at a crucial time when the Kenya Simbas are headed to South Africa to prepare for the World Cup qualifiers in Uganda in July.
