Bayern Munich goalkeeper and captain Manuel Neuer has suffered a setback in his return from a calf injury.

The German club said in a statement on Saturday that Neuer would continue to remain out of action as he recuperates from an injury suffered in an unorthodox fashion.

Neuer tore his calf muscle while celebrating a goal in Bayern's Champions League last 16 first-leg win over Bayer Leverkusen in early March which ended 3-0 in Bayern's favour.

The 38-year-old had returned to training with the ball in recent days but reinjured the calf muscle in training this weekend, Bayern said.

" Manuel Neuer had "a reaction in the calf muscle" and will need to sit out training "in the coming days", the statement from Bayern read.

The news puts Neuer in doubt for Bayern's Bundesliga meeting with St Pauli on 29 March. Bayern face Italian Champions Inter Milan in the Champions League quarterfinals over a two-legged tie in April.

Neuer has 365 appearances for Bayern since joining the club from Schalke 04 in 2011. He has also featured 124 times for the German national team.
