Elon Musk has announced his departure from President Donald Trump's government cost-cutting task force, marking the end of his temporary role as a special government employee.

Musk had been part of the Department of Government Efficiency, known as Doge, since it was launched earlier this year to curb wasteful government spending.

In a post on X, Musk said his scheduled time in the role was over. “As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending,” he wrote.

Musk was appointed under a federal provision that allows private citizens to serve up to 130 days per year in government roles. Starting from Trump’s inauguration on January 20, Musk was expected to reach that limit by late May.

He praised the agency’s mission and said it would continue to grow.

“I believe the cost-cutting agency will become a way of life throughout government,” he wrote, adding that it will “only strengthen over time.”

A White House official told news outlet Semafor that Musk’s formal offboarding process would begin on Wednesday night.
