This year’s celebrations are being held under the theme “Harnessing Kenya’s Blue Economy for National Prosperity.” President Nataša Pirc Musar of Slovenia is the chief guest and is currently in Kenya for a three-day state visit, in a show of deepening diplomatic ties.
Madaraka Day, marked every June 1, commemorates the day Kenya attained internal self-rule from British colonial rule in 1963. The event features military parades, cultural displays, and speeches reflecting on Kenya’s journey and national goals.
Ahead of the celebrations, Homa Bay has been buzzing with preparations and development activity. President Ruto, who arrived in the region on Thursday, has launched several key projects to spur economic growth and boost regional equity.
Among the projects unveiled is the tarmacking of the 40-kilometre Marindi–Oria Bridge Road, the commissioning of 901 affordable housing units in Kisumu under the LAPFUND Makasembo initiative, and the launch of the Lake Victoria Point project in Kirembe.
He also led the groundbreaking of the Gor Mahia Ring Road in Magina and the revitalization of the Homa Bay pier, a long-neglected facility now being restored to support the growth of the blue economy.
