A Senate committee has instructed the Ministry of Lands to fast-track the resettlement of internally displaced persons (IDPs) who remain in camps within Laikipia County.

Mohammed Faki, chair of the Senate Committee on Lands, Environment, and Natural Resources, noted that the government had already acquired 45 farms in Laikipia specifically for the purpose of relocating the affected families.

Faki emphasized the need for swift action, warning that further delays could expose the unoccupied land to encroachment. He insisted that by the end of the year, no IDP family should still be living in makeshift shelters at the Salama camp.

He appealed to both the national and county governments to prioritize the IDPs’ plight, noting that the prolonged wait has subjected them to undignified living conditions and psychological distress.

The committee’s visit aimed to assess the situation on the ground and push for immediate steps toward resettlement.

Faki reiterated that those affected have endured enough and deserve to live on land that was rightfully secured for their restoration and dignity.

He added that ensuring the rightful beneficiaries are identified and settled will not only end years of suffering but also safeguard public land from misuse
