A confrontation between suspected thugs and police in Nairobi's Eastleigh area ended in tragedy as officers shot dead one of two suspects.

According to police, the incident occurred on Thursday evening along Third Avenue, just outside a mosque, after two suspects on a motorcycle reportedly snatched a mobile phone from a pedestrian, threatening to stab the victim.

Officers patrolling the area intercepted the suspects as they attempted to flee. In the process, police shot and killed one of the suspects.

The second accomplice abandoned the motorcycle used in the robbery and escaped on foot, according to police.

Authorities recovered the stolen phone, which was returned to its owner, along with a knife and the motorcycle involved in the crime.

Police said they have increased their presence in the area ahead of the upcoming Eid celebrations.

Residents have expressed concerns about frequent robberies carried out by suspects on motorcycles targeting their valuables.

The deceased’s body was taken to the mortuary for autopsy and further investigations.

Nairobi Police Commander George Sedah stated that law enforcement has stepped up operations across the city to tackle rising robbery cases.

Sedah revealed that more undercover officers are now patrolling various parts of the city to combat the rising crime.

This increased presence has led to the arrest and arraignment of several suspects.
