Pirro, who previously served as a county prosecutor and elected judge in New York, was confirmed in a 50–45 vote.

The U.S. Senate on Saturday confirmed Jeanine Pirro, a staunch ally of President Trump and longtime Fox News personality, as the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia a critical prosecutorial post with sweeping jurisdiction and national influence.

Pirro, who previously served as a county prosecutor and elected judge in New York, was confirmed in a 50–45 vote.

She has held the post in an acting capacity since May. Before her nomination, she co-hosted Fox News' “The Five,” where she often endorsed Trump’s policies and regularly hosted him in interviews.

Her confirmation underscores Trump’s continued push to embed loyalists in key legal institutions.

The D.C. U.S. Attorney’s Office, with its expansive mandate and proximity to the federal government, plays a central role in prosecuting high-profile cases, including those tied to public corruption, national security, and federal law enforcement oversight.

Pirro’s nomination came after the president withdrew Edward Martin, a controversial pick who drew backlash over his role in firing prosecutors tied to January 6 cases.

Martin, a known “Stop the Steal” activist who was present outside the Capitol during the 2021 insurrection, failed to secure adequate support in the Senate, prompting the administration to pivot to Pirro.

Unlike Martin, Pirro faced relatively mild opposition from Senate Democrats, despite concerns over her partisan rhetoric and lack of recent courtroom experience.

Her strong media presence and ties to Trump’s political base, however, made her a strategic pick for the administration’s ongoing effort to assert influence over the federal justice system.

The confirmation came as the Senate rushed to conclude a slate of votes before the August recess. Senate Majority Leader John Thune announced the chamber would adjourn until September 2, following completion of 12 remaining votes.

There was no objection to Thune’s motion, signaling bipartisan agreement to move business along.

President Trump celebrated Pirro’s confirmation on Truth Social, praising Senate Republicans and Thune for “fighting hard to get these wonderful and talented people approved.” He also accused Democrats of trying to delay confirmations for political reasons.

Pirro’s appointment adds to a growing list of Trump-aligned figures assuming influential federal roles, including Emil Bove the president’s former defense attorney who was confirmed earlier this week to a seat on the U.S. Court of Appeals.

Pirro now takes permanent charge of one of the most powerful prosecutorial offices in the country a move likely to have far-reaching implications in the Justice Department, particularly as the 2026 election cycle looms.
