In Summary

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and DCI boss Amin Mohamed, while addressing the media on Wednesday, said that Koimburi planned the incident with the help of close associates.

The supposed abduction of Juja MP George Koimburi was faked, according to police investigations that have exposed a scheme involving torn clothes, staged screams, and a hotel hideout.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and DCI boss Amin Mohamed, while addressing the media on Wednesday, said that Koimburi planned the incident with the help of close associates.

The MP allegedly followed instructions from Peter Kiratu, the Juja NG-CDF chairman, and used vehicles owned by Kiratu and Cyrus Kieru to carry out the plan.

Kanja explained that the UDA MP first met a man identified as Karanja Gatana at Kiratu’s home in Mugoda.

Gatana, who was driving a Honda CRV (KBP 096W), joined Koimburi and three other men as they mapped the church route to simulate the kidnapping scene.

Later, Koimburi drove a Subaru Forester (KDG 803B) with two men to the same church, where they staged the abduction.

"The two men got out quickly, and there were screams as the MP was forced into the vehicle," Kanja narrated.

They then drove to Jakarada, near the COVID research centre, where Koimburi instructed them to stop next to Kiratu’s vehicle.

According to the IG, Koimburi remained with two men who warned him against speaking to the police.

Police have since recovered both vehicles.

Gatana, now in custody, told police he later dropped the MP at a hotel where they spent the night.

The next day, Kanja said that he (Gatana) picked Koimburi up and drove him to Jacaranda in Kiambu County, where they faked the discovery scene.

"Before the MP stepped out, Gatana said they tore Koimburi’s clothes to look like he had been assaulted," Kanja stated.

One suspect has been arrested.

"We have recovered two vehicles used in the plan and confirmed the sequence of events," Kanja confirmed.

DCI Amin also condemned the MP’s actions, calling it disturbing.

"It’s quite inconceivable for an MP to go to the extent of stage managing his own abduction. Creating a lot of tension and fear in the country," he said.

He added that detectives had traced Koimburi’s movements from the church to the hotel, including the exact room he stayed in, but could not release full details yet.

"We were able to explain investigations and to expose him. Responsible to the public as a Member of Parliament, he was indeed not," Amin said.
