Kalonzo demands crisis talks amid claims of abductions

Koimburi was found on Monday morning abandoned in a coffee plantation in the Kibichoi area of Kiambu County.
The opposition has scheduled a meeting for Tuesday to address concerns over reported abductions across the country.
In a statement released on Monday, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka announced that opposition leaders would gather to discuss what he described as an alarming rise in political intimidation and harassment.
Kalonzo also voiced strong condemnation of the alleged abduction of Juja Member of Parliament, George Koimburi.
He condemned the alleged abduction of George Koimburi in the strongest terms, warning that the incident reflects a disturbing shift in the country’s political environment.
“If a sitting MP, who is supposed to have state protection, can be taken in broad daylight, then ordinary Kenyans are completely vulnerable,” he said.
Koimburi was found on Monday morning abandoned in a coffee plantation in the Kibichoi area of Kiambu County.
Details about the abduction remain unclear. The Juja MP claimed he was assaulted by unknown individuals who seized him outside a church in Kiambu on Sunday afternoon.
Police have distanced themselves from the matter and said they are investigating the incident following a report filed by the family.
Police say they intend to question Juja MP George Koimburi as part of ongoing investigations into his alleged abduction.
Authorities are particularly interested in understanding how those who rescued him discovered his whereabouts in the Kibichoi coffee plantation.
“His phone had been off since Friday when officers attempted to arrest him but later aborted the mission,” a source familiar with the case said.
Koimburi was discovered lying unconscious, still dressed in the navy-blue suit he had worn on Sunday when he was reportedly taken.
The motive behind the incident remains unclear.
Eyewitnesses say he was picked up by an ambulance and rushed to Karen Hospital for treatment.
His wife, Ann Koimburi, recounted that the MP was seized by two men posing as worshippers.
According to her, they dragged him into a Subaru Forester with a tampered number plate, likely intended to conceal the vehicle’s identity. The men, dressed in plain clothes, did not identify themselves during the abduction.
Former Deputy President and DCP Party Leader Rigathi Gachagua also weighed in, condemning the incident and characterizing it as part of a broader pattern of political persecution aimed at silencing opposition figures.
