Motion seeks to rename Juja Road after veteran broadcaster, Mbotela

The proposal seeks to permanently honour the late veteran broadcaster, who was a prominent figure in Kenyan media for decades.
Juja Road in Nairobi may soon be renamed Leonard Mambo Mbotela Road, if a motion before the Nairobi County Assembly is adopted and implemented by Governor Johnson Sakaja's administration.
The proposal seeks to permanently honour the late veteran broadcaster, who was a prominent figure in Kenyan media for decades.
The motion, tabled by Kiamaiko MCA Joseph Ndung’u, describes Mbotela as “a distinguished Kenyan journalist, broadcaster, and patriot who made indelible contributions to the nation through his dedicated service and unwavering commitment to public communication.”
Mbotela died in February at the age of 85, leaving behind a legacy built on decades of work in both radio and television. He was widely known for his calm and professionalism, especially during national crises.
In particular, he is remembered for his composed appearance on air during the 1982 attempted coup, when he was forced by mutinous soldiers to read a statement announcing a change of government.
The motion states, “Acknowledging that his courage and selfless efforts during the 1982 attempted coup, where he risked his life to broadcast messages of peace and stability, demonstrated his unwavering dedication to the nation’s well-being, earning respect and admiration.”
According to the motion, renaming the road would be a symbolic and lasting gesture of national appreciation. “Plastering his name on the major road,” it reads, “would be upholding professionalism and consistency in using journalism to serve public interest, educate and entertain.”
Mbotela’s career was also defined by his long-running radio and television programme Je, Huu ni Ungwana? (Is this decent?), which focused on social etiquette and moral conduct.
The motion celebrates the show as a key part of his impact: “His iconic radio and television programmes, particularly Je, Huu ni Ungwana?, and his coverage of national events played a pivotal role in shaping Kenyan culture, promoting civic responsibility, and fostering national unity.”
Juja Road is one of the city’s main transport routes, cutting through densely populated and historically significant areas. The motion notes that this makes it a suitable location to honour the legendary broadcaster.
“...Juja Road, being a major artery in Nairobi, offers a significant opportunity to publicly recognise and honour Leonard Mambo Mbotela’s contributions to the nation,” it reads.
The motion concludes with a call for action: “This assembly therefore urges the county executive to initiate the process of renaming Juja Road to Leonard Mambo Mbotela Road, in honour of the late Leonard Mambo Mbotela, EGH, in recognition of his exceptional service to the Republic of Kenya.”
If approved, the renaming would highlight the place of journalism in shaping Kenya’s national identity and affirm the enduring legacy of one of its most respected media voices.
