Kenyan named Ford Foundation's Regional Director
Mliwa brings over two decades of expertise in social justice.
The Ford Foundation has announced the appointment of Kenyan Margaret Mliwa as its new Regional Director for East Africa.
Based in Nairobi, the foundation's regional office will now be led by Mliwa.
As an independent organization, the Ford Foundation focuses on addressing poverty and injustice, supporting democratic values, fostering global collaboration, and promoting human progress.
Martin Abregu, the Vice President for International Programs at the foundation, commended Mliwa's appointment, highlighting her outstanding skills and leadership.
"We are excited to honor and celebrate Margaret Mliwa’s leadership in her role as the regional director for the Ford Foundation’s East Africa office," Abregu stated.
He highlighted that her expertise in storytelling, mentorship, and relationship-building would significantly enhance the foundation’s efforts in East Africa.
Mliwa shared her enthusiasm about the new role, describing it as an honor to lead the Ford Foundation's East Africa regional office and further its impactful legacy in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
Since 1963, our efforts have been shaped by collaboration with East Africa's pioneers and institutions. I am excited to continue this legacy by working alongside our grantees and partners, while upholding the values of dignity, justice, and equity that we cherish," she remarked.
Mliwa brings over two decades of expertise in social justice, partnering with governments, civil society, and philanthropic organizations to support youth programs that are community-driven.
These initiatives are focused on amplifying youth voices, promoting rights-based approaches, and fostering leadership within youth-led organizations.
Prior to joining the Ford Foundation in 2017, Mliwa served as the Country Director for Restless Development Tanzania, a global agency led by youth.
Her career also includes her role as the head of the Youth Social Mobilization Unit in Kenya's Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
Additionally, Mliwa played a key role in establishing the National Youth Service framework for the government of Sierra Leone as the lead consultant.
Mliwa is a Commonwealth Scholarship recipient and holds a Bachelor's degree in Education.
