Walkway installation intensifies in Nairobi CBD as county targets additional streets

The Nairobi County Government has accelerated the development of pedestrian walkways within the Central Business District (CBD), with plans underway to revamp both the upper and lower areas of the city's commercial center.
Nairobi Mobility Chief Officer Dr. Machel Waikenda recently led a site inspection of several completed and ongoing projects aimed at transforming the city’s pedestrian infrastructure.
During the tour, Dr. Waikenda reaffirmed the county’s focus on improving walkability and enhancing the urban experience by redesigning key streets and public spaces to better accommodate foot traffic.
“Governor Sakaja’s administration is focused on restoring order and improving mobility across the city. This initiative allows pedestrians to move freely and safely, while also beautifying the city and improving its functionality,” he said.
One of the newly refurbished sections, the Moi Avenue Service Lane near Ambassador Hotel, now features modern cabro paving.
The upgrade has not only brought visual appeal but also improved organization in the once-congested area.
Dr. Waikenda urged Nairobi residents to be patient and supportive as construction progresses.
He noted that ongoing works include portions of Haile Selassie Avenue and Taifa Lane, with several other locations identified for upcoming enhancements.
“We’re executing a thorough plan to reconstruct all major pedestrian routes within the CBD. In addition to boosting safety and accessibility, this initiative is also creating job opportunities for youth, who are actively working alongside our county engineers,” he added.
The walkway improvement project is part of a larger urban renewal strategy championed by Governor Johnson Sakaja.
Other focus areas under this plan include road repairs, reducing traffic congestion, and upgrading public infrastructure throughout Nairobi.
As these changes take shape, city dwellers can expect a cleaner, safer, and more pedestrian-friendly environment in the heart of the capital.
