Electricity customers have been asked to top up their tokens before a scheduled service break that will affect mobile payments early Monday morning.
Kenya Power issued the notice ahead of a planned M-Pesa upgrade that will bring its Paybill services to a standstill for three hours.
The power supplier made the announcement on Saturday, urging users to prepare in advance as Safaricom prepares to carry out system improvements between 12:30 am and 3:30 am on September 22, 2025.
Safaricom had earlier confirmed that all M-Pesa services, including airtime purchases, would be out of reach during that short period as it works on the platform.
Kenya Power said that several services will be out of action during the upgrade, especially those connected to mobile payments.
"During this period, Kenya Power paybill numbers, including 888880 for token purchase and 888888 for postpaid bill payments, will not be available," the alert stated.
Customers who depend on M-Pesa to recharge their electricity accounts have been warned of possible payment hitches if they try to make transactions while the system is being worked on.
"We encourage you to purchase their electricity tokens in advance before the scheduled maintenance to avoid any inconvenience," the company said.
Even though M-Pesa services will go offline for a few hours, Kenya Power said it has other ways customers can use to buy electricity or settle bills during that time.
These include Airtel Money and several partner banks such as KCB, Equity, Co-operative Bank, I&M Bank, NCBA Bank, Family Bank, National Bank of Kenya, and DTB. These platforms can be accessed using mobile apps or USSD codes.
The power firm also shared its official social media handles where updates and additional details will be posted during the service break.
On its part, Safaricom said the upcoming upgrade is aimed at improving the strength, safety, and speed of its mobile money services.
"For 18 years, M-Pesa has continued to transform lives across Kenya, connecting you, our customers, to opportunities every day. To support this and meet our promise to offer always-on, safe, secure, and worry-free financial products and services, we will be conducting a scheduled system upgrade on Monday, September 22, 2025, from 12:30 am to 3:30 am," the company said.
Safaricom added that the selected time was meant to cause as little interruption as possible and offered its apology for any trouble caused.
"We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause," it said.
