Sitati takes over as Acting Registrar of Political Parties after Nderitu’s exit to IEBC

Sitati steps into a role previously held by Nderitu since 2018, a period marked by reforms that helped transform the ORPP into a more efficient and influential institution.
The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties has appointed Sophia Sitati as the Acting Registrar, marking a key leadership change at a critical time for Kenya’s political and governance institutions.
Her appointment, effective July 14, comes shortly after the former Registrar, Ann Nderitu, was selected as a Commissioner at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
In a statement issued on Tuesday, July 15, the Office confirmed that Sitati has been seconded from the Office of the Attorney General, State Department for Justice and Constitutional Affairs. She previously served as Chief State Counsel.
“Ms. Sitati brings to ORPP a wealth of expertise and experience as a seasoned legal practitioner, having served in various portfolios in Government,” the statement read.
Her assumption of office comes as the ORPP continues its efforts to strengthen political parties in line with its constitutional role. Sitati was officially briefed by the outgoing Registrar on July 15 during a handover meeting held at the ORPP headquarters in Nairobi.
She also held a meeting with members of the management team and staff.
Sitati steps into a role previously held by Nderitu since 2018, a period marked by reforms that helped transform the ORPP into a more efficient and influential institution.
“She laid ORPP’s institutional foundation such as human capital development, stakeholder engagements, legal and ICT reforms, capacity building of political parties officials and targeted Special Interest Groups,” the statement noted.
Under Nderitu’s leadership, the office also gained recognition as a reference point among both regional and international institutions in the political governance space.
A major part of her work also involved internal policy development that covered various functional areas of the organisation.
“These initiatives have led to effective execution of the Office mandate and progressed democratic governance in Kenya,” the statement added.
The ORPP, formed in 2008, plays a central role in the registration, regulation and oversight of political parties across the country.
Sitati is expected to lead a committed team to ensure continuity in upholding democratic values and delivering on the Office’s mandate.
Her appointment signals a new chapter for the institution, with expectations that she will carry forward the gains made under Nderitu’s stewardship.
