MP Babu criticizes speaker Wetang'ula after ejection over dress code

The legislator was ordered to vacate the chamber after being spotted wearing legal attire.
Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has criticized National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula following his dramatic ejection from Parliament on Tuesday afternoon over a dress code violation.
The legislator was ordered to vacate the chamber after being spotted wearing legal attire, a move initiated by Mathare MP Anthony Oluoch, who questioned whether the ensemble aligned with the official parliamentary dress code.
“If I look at the Speaker’s panel, including yourself, you are dressed in a collar. Is it in order that the member for Embakasi East walks and sits in the House dressed as the Speaker? We need guidance on whether this forms part of the proper dressing code of this House,” Oluoch said while raising a point of order.
Speaker Wetang’ula subsequently ruled that Babu Owino’s attire was inappropriate and ordered him out of the chamber.
The Embakasi East MP, a recently admitted advocate of the High Court, later responded in a video posted Tuesday evening, expressing disappointment at the Speaker’s decision. He maintained that his attire was a symbol of academic achievement and professional identity, not a breach of parliamentary decorum.
“It took me six years four in university and two at the Kenya School of Law to earn this dress code,” Babu Owino stated. “The Speaker sent me out for wearing a bib, yet over 300 MPs simply went to the shop and bought a tie. You have to wonder who should have been ejected.”
He further claimed that the Speaker’s action was politically motivated, though he added that he had forgiven Wetang’ula for the decision.
Owino was admitted to the bar in May 2025 alongside 609 others in a ceremony officiated by Chief Justice Martha Koome. Since then, he has been actively involved in legal matters, including participating in the high-profile case of Ndiangui Kinyagia, whose disappearance remains unresolved.
