The two leaders, who spoke during a funeral ceremony in Longisa, Bomet County, applauded Odinga’s recent move to reconcile with President William Ruto, calling it a pivotal gesture in calming political tensions and safeguarding the country’s peace.

Bomet East MP Richard Yegon and former area MP Nick Salat came together on Saturday, July 12, 2025, to commend former Prime Minister Raila Odinga for what they described as a history of making bold, selfless decisions for the sake of national unity and stability.

The two leaders, who spoke during a funeral ceremony in Longisa, Bomet County, applauded Odinga’s recent move to reconcile with President William Ruto, calling it a pivotal gesture in calming political tensions and safeguarding the country’s peace.

Yegon, a member of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), described Odinga as a statesman whose latest actions exemplify true patriotism. He expressed admiration for the veteran opposition leader, noting that he continues to put the country above personal or political interests.

“Raila, thank you for stepping in and helping to steer the country away from chaos. At a time when others were willing to let Kenya descend into turmoil like Haiti or Sudan, you showed great courage and leadership,” said Yegon.

He went on to say, “I’m praying that one day you will lead this country as president. You have earned it.”

Nick Salat, the former Bomet East MP and long-serving KANU Secretary-General, echoed similar sentiments. Having supported Odinga’s presidential bid in 2022, Salat said he has always believed in Odinga’s dedication to the nation.

“Baba, we know you would never sit back and watch Kenya crumble. I was the first to join government after the elections, and I’m glad you followed. Your decision proves your unwavering commitment to the people. Despite all you’ve gone through, thank you for always prioritizing Kenya,” Salat stated.

During his address at the event, Odinga used the occasion to speak against the controversial shoot-to-kill directive allegedly issued by President Ruto and Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen in response to recent protests.

While affirming the right to demonstrate, the ODM leader urged Kenyans to approach protests with purpose and restraint. He emphasized that demonstrations should be issue-driven and goal-oriented, rather than perpetual acts of unrest.

He recalled the historic 1990 protests that pushed for multiparty democracy, saying such actions were grounded in a clear vision and timeline.

“There is a season for everything,” Raila said. “We once took to the streets for a cause multipartyism. Protests are not an end in themselves; they must have direction and a defined objective.”
