The Sh710 million project, which includes a Sh110 million contribution from the Garissa County Government, is expected to enhance regional accessibility and promote economic growth by facilitating faster movement of goods and people.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki on Monday inspected the ongoing upgrading of the Garissa Airstrip, a major infrastructure project aimed at improving transport connectivity and boosting trade across Northern Kenya.

The Sh710 million project, which includes a Sh110 million contribution from the Garissa County Government, is expected to enhance regional accessibility and promote economic growth by facilitating faster movement of goods and people.

Speaking during the inspection, Kindiki commended the contractor for being ahead of schedule and urged adherence to high-quality standards to ensure the project’s timely completion by December 2025.

“The government is committed to transforming Northern Kenya through key infrastructure investments that will open up the region for trade and investment,” said the Deputy President.

He was accompanied by Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, Garissa Township MP Major Dekow Barrow, and other local leaders who expressed optimism that the upgraded airstrip will attract more commercial activity and improve access to essential services.

The Garissa Airstrip upgrade is part of the national government’s broader plan to modernize air transport facilities across the country, particularly in underserved regions.

The Deputy President added that the government has invested Sh13 billion in affordable housing, fresh produce markets, and student hostels in Garissa.

Other key projects include the Tana River Bridge in Garissa Town, worth Sh1 billion, and last-mile electricity connections valued at Sh1.7 billion, which will benefit about 7,200 households in the county.
