ODM to host football tournament in Mombasa as part of 20th anniversary celebrations

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) will this coming weekend kicks off its first-ever football tournament featuring Kenya’s top-flight clubs as part of its ODM at 20 celebrations.

The two-day tournament, which runs from Thursday, October 9 to Friday, October 10, 2025, will feature football heavyweights AFC Leopards, Gor Mahia, Shabana FC, and Bandari FC at the Mbaraki Sports Grounds.

The champions will later play an exhibition match against Chungwa FC, a team made up of ODM members and lawmakers from Bunge FC.

Tournament coordinator, Irene Mayaka, a Nominated MP, said all preparations are complete and that the organizing committee has been working closely with the participating clubs to ensure the event runs smoothly.

“The steering committee has held several meetings with representatives of the clubs, and all teams have confirmed their full participation,” Mayaka said.

Officials from the four clubs expressed enthusiasm for the event, describing it as both a competitive and unifying platform.

AFC Leopards Secretary General Isaac Mulindi said the tournament comes at the right time and offers his team a good opportunity to prepare for their upcoming Premier League clash against Bandari in Nairobi.

His Gor Mahia counterpart, Nicanor Arum, said his players are ready to give their best and aim to lift the trophy.

“The boys are in high spirits. We’ll play our hearts out to win,” he said.

Shabana FC Secretary General Elizaphan Kerama said his team is traveling to Mombasa confident of performing well and emerging victorious.

ODM Deputy Party Leader and Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sharrif Nassir confirmed that all local arrangements have been finalized, saying Mombasa is ready to host the historic tournament.

“It’s all systems go for the soccer extravaganza,” Nassir said.

“We urge football fans to turn out in large numbers to cheer their favorite teams.”

ODM has also made travel and accommodation arrangements for all teams and officials, with the squads expected to depart Nairobi on Wednesday afternoon ahead of the tournament.
