A 50-year-old woman is currently hospitalized in Nairobi after sustaining a serious gunshot wound to her leg, which police have described as an accidental discharge.

The victim is married to a businessman who legally owns a firearm.

The incident took place on Sunday morning at their home in Riara Apartments, located off Ngong Road.

According to the husband, he had just arrived and asked his wife to help him carry three bags into the house.

One of these bags contained a loaded Beretta pistol with 15 rounds.

Unaware of the gun inside, the woman lifted the bags and set them down on the parking lot floor.

Police believe the firearm may have discharged when the bag was placed down with some force.

The husband reported that while they were still in the parking area, he heard a gunshot and immediately realized something was wrong.

He quickly rushed to his wife’s side and found her bleeding from her right leg.

He immediately took her to the hospital, where she was admitted and is currently in stable condition.

According to police, the firearm discharged inside one of the bags after it was placed on the ground.

The bullet first struck a wall, then ricocheted and hit the woman in the leg.

Investigators discovered that the pistol’s safety catch had been left off, which likely caused the accidental discharge. The bag was also torn at the time of the incident.

Officers visited both the hospital and the scene as part of their ongoing investigation.

The firearm was confiscated from the husband and is being held as evidence.
