Kalonzo maintains June 25 will be a public holiday, outlines planned activities
In a message shared via his official X account on Sunday evening, June 15, Kalonzo urged citizens across the country to join in honoring the fallen youth.
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has reaffirmed that June 25, 2025, will be marked as a public holiday in remembrance of the young Kenyans who lost their lives during the 2024 anti-government demonstrations, despite the lack of official recognition by the state.
In a message shared via his official X account on Sunday evening, June 15, Kalonzo urged citizens across the country to join in honoring the fallen youth.
He encouraged participants to carry a rose and a candle as symbolic gestures of remembrance, adding that flowers would be laid along Parliament Road and candles lit in tribute.
Kalonzo underscored the significance of the day, saying it serves as a moment to reflect on the sacrifices made by the youth in their pursuit of justice and economic equity.
The former VP went on to underscore that the planned commemoration is not just symbolic but a powerful expression of national grief and a demand for justice.
He urged the youth and other citizens to stand firm, asserting that no amount of intimidation should silence the calls for accountability and reform.
“This is not about politics it’s about dignity, justice, and the future of our country,” he said. “Let June 25 serve as a reminder that Kenyans will not be silenced, and that those we lost mattered.”
He further urged places of worship, civil society organizations, and communities across the country to join in marking the day in solidarity.
Kalonzo wrapped up his message with a solemn pledge: “Their names will not be forgotten. Their courage will continue to inspire us. And our resolve will not waver until justice is served.”
Kalonzo's reaffirmation follows his earlier declaration of June 25 as a National Day of Remembrance for young Kenyans who lost their lives or sustained injuries while demanding accountability and better governance.
Addressing a rally in Machakos on Friday, May 30, 2025, alongside other senior opposition leaders, the Wiper Party chief condemned the government for its continued silence and failure to compensate families affected by the deadly 2024 anti-Finance Bill protests.
“We will observe June 25, 2025, as Gen Z Revolution Day a day dedicated to celebrating the new wave of liberation led by our youth,” Kalonzo declared.
He went on to affirm that the date would stand as a National Day of Remembrance: “June 25 shall forever remain a holiday in honor of the young people of this nation.
We must recognize and respect the sacrifices made by the youth who lost their lives, even as their families continue to wait for justice and compensation from the government.”
During a televised interview on the night of Tuesday, June 10, 2025, Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura dismissed claims that June 25 would be declared a public holiday, countering calls from opposition leaders.
“We’ve seen statements suggesting that June 25 will be observed as a public holiday. Let me make it clear there is no such holiday. If it falls on a weekday, it remains a regular working day,” Mwaura asserted.
He went on to criticize ongoing efforts to revive the Gen Z protest movement, saying, “What some people are doing is trying to resurrect the Gen Z movement. That chapter is closed. As a country, we need to move forward.”
