Harriet Okach was named as the new Chairperson to serve the remainder of the current term, which was vacated by ex-chair Alexander Sasha Mutai who stepped down on Friday, 30th May at the RFUEA Grounds during a Special General Meeting.

A historical moment in Kenya's Rugby scene took place on Thursday evening as a woman became the head of Kenya's Rugby Union following elections.

Harriet Okach was named as the new Chairperson to serve the remainder of the current term, which was vacated by ex-chair Alexander Sasha Mutai who stepped down on Friday, 30th May at the RFUEA Grounds during a Special General Meeting.

Mutai had been singled out over integrity issues by his fellow board members and resigned hurriedly before he could be impeached.

In her acceptance remarks Thursday night, Okatch expressed gratitude and called for unity within the sport.

"I’m humbled to be entrusted with this position. Thank you to the affiliates, the KRU Board, and all stakeholders for your support. To our secretariat and the playing component, thank you for focusing on keeping the game going in spite of all the turmoil," she said.

"To our fans and all stakeholders. Sports unites, so please let’s all come together in growing this game that we all love. Asante sana."

Okatch first joined the KRU Board during the 2023 Annual General Meeting, held at the RFUEA Grounds, where she received the highest number of votes for any board member.

Prior to her election to the board, she served as Honorary Treasurer at Kisumu RFC.

Since joining the board, she has been the Director in charge of Marketing and Commercial Affairs at the Union.
