Two nabbed in Machakos with bhang valued at Ksh7.5 million

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) reported that the suspects had hidden the narcotics in ten gunny bags in an attempt to evade detection.
Police in Machakos County have arrested two individuals found with 250 kilograms of bhang, estimated to be worth Ksh7.5 million.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) reported that the suspects had hidden the narcotics in ten gunny bags in an attempt to evade detection.
Two suspects, identified as Samuel Baraza and Lawrence Onyango Asindi, were arrested in Machakos County after being found in possession of 250 kilograms of bhang, valued at Sh7.5 million.
The duo was traveling in a black Toyota Noah, registration number KDN 218A, when they were intercepted by anti-narcotics officers at Kitanga village.
Authorities say the suspects had earlier evaded a police roadblock at the Lari flyover in Kiambu County.
Acting on intelligence, the Anti-Narcotics Unit set up a trap and successfully intercepted the vehicle. While no weapons were recovered during the operation, officers discovered ten gunny bags tightly packed with bhang concealed inside the van.
“The bhang, estimated to be worth Ksh7.5 million on the street, was found hidden in the vehicle,” the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said in a statement.
The seized narcotics are being held at DCI Headquarters as investigations continue, with the suspects expected to be arraigned in court.
The incident follows a recent crackdown in which four individuals were arrested during a multi-agency operation that exposed a drug trafficking network operating along the Moyale-Isiolo highway.
In a statement released on the night of Friday, April 11, 2025, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) revealed details of a sting operation that led to the seizure of a large consignment of cannabis sativa along the Moyale-Isiolo highway.
During the operation, a long-distance truck a Mercedes-Benz Actros, was stopped and searched, leading to the discovery of gunny bags filled with bales of cannabis. Each bale was tightly packed, wrapped in yellowish cellophane, and cleverly hidden within the truck’s chassis.
The vehicle was being driven by 33-year-old Boniface Nthenge Kithuku. Police believe the sophisticated concealment method points to a well-coordinated drug trafficking syndicate.
"A multi-agency team intercepted a long-haul truck and recovered a major consignment of cannabis sativa, leading to the arrest of four suspects," the DCI noted, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to dismantle narcotics networks operating along key transit routes.
