Rescue teams have been dispatched to Kilifi and Lamu counties after three boats capsized early Saturday in separate incidents.

The Kenya Red Cross confirmed the incidents occurred at Vidazini and Mnarani and Mutuni in Lamu, with several passengers rescued despite rough sea conditions.

"Several people have been rescued, with search efforts ongoing despite rough sea conditions. Our teams are on the ground supporting offshore response, medical evaluation and lifeguard services," said Kenya Red Cross.

The exact number of those missing or saved is yet to be confirmed.

Efforts are being coordinated by the Kenya Red Cross in collaboration with the Kenya Coast Guard, Kenya Maritime Authority, Beach Management Units and County Governments.

The teams are offering offshore rescue, medical aid, and lifeguard services amid challenging weather.

The capsizing came just hours after the Kenya Meteorological Department warned of strong winds and waves in coastal and other low land areas.

Winds exceeding 30 knots were forecasted, with conditions expected to worsen over the weekend, reaching over 35 knots.

In response, Mombasa County suspended all marine and beach activities.

Governor Abdulswamad Nassir announced the closure of public beaches for two days and an indefinite ban on commercial and recreational activities at sea, including fishing and water sports.
